Profile and Activities

The Placement Department acts as the bridge between the institution and the industry. A comprehensive research has been made and to suit the industry requirements special training on soft skills is provided to the students. The placement department brings in some of the best recruiters to the campus and has been achieving a gradual growth in placing students in good positions.

Activities

The Department nurtures industry as well as institute interaction. It helps to organize and co-ordinate frequent industrial visits and inplant training. It receives and forwards the feedback pertinent to curriculum improvement from the visiting companies to the faculty, to ensure that the curriculum follows the latest industrial trends.

Helps every student define his/her career interest through individual expert counselling.

Organizes and coordinates Campus Placement Program, to fulfill its commitment of a job to every aspirant.

Keeps the students informed on the career related articles.

Conducting career oriented programmes.

Assists the students in writing resume.

CAMPUS DRIVE PROGRAMME BY Alcance Technologies

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a Campus Drive program for final year students on 10/02/17 in our college. Mr.Godwin, Senior HR of Alcance Technologies along with his team conducted the programme. Students were selected for the post of Voice/Non-Voice Service in Alcance Technologies. A total of 243 final year students from all departments participated in the campus drive.
The students were first briefed at Illango Hall about the organization, Job and how selection will be done. The programme was conducted in 3 stages. First round was Written Test. Students were asked to take a written test for 30 mins which tested their English communication skills. Students were selected based on their performance in the written test.52 students were selected in the first round.The students were divided into 15 students per group and group discussion was conducted . Students were selected based on their performance in the group discussion. The students selected in this round were asked to attend HR Interview immediately. 21 students attended the interview. After the personal interview 11 students were selected. These students will be given offer letters shortly.

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a Campus Drive program for final year students on 09/02/17 in our college. Mrs.Sakthipriya, HR, HDFC Sales Pvt. Ltd and Mr. Santosh Kumar, HR with their team consisting of Mr. Mohan, Area Manager, Mr. Santosh, HR Assistant and Mr. Udaya Kumar, Area Manager conducted the programme.
Students were selected for the post of Key Resource-Customer Relation in HDFC Sales Pvt. Ltd . A total of 98 final year male students from all departments participated in the campus drive. The students were first briefed at Illango Hall about the organization, Job and how selection will be done. A PPT about the company was also shown. The programme was conducted in 2 stages. First round was Written Test. Students were asked to take a written test for 30 mins which tested their numerical ability and English communication skills. Students were selected based on their performance in the written test. 64 students selected in this round were asked to attend HR Interview immediately. After the personal interview 22 students were selected. These students will be given offer letters shortly.

Title: Campus Drive Programme by Eurekha Forbes
Date and Venue: 03/02/17 / Elango Arangam
Objective of the Programme: Orientation about Eurekha Forbes and Recruitment.
Facilitators: Mr. Raj, Mr. Shankar, HR of Eurekha Forbes.
Brief Description: A total of 200 final year students from all the disciplines participated in the campus drive. A pre-brief session was given about the organization and selection criteria in Elango Arangam. For every 30 students Group Discussion was conducted (first round). The selected 46 students were called for HR Interview (second round) and personal interview (third round). 35 students got selected after the three rounds and were given offer letters.

REPORT ON IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a program on 15/09/16 on Importance of Communication and English Language for final year students at Illango Hall. The Chief Guest for this program was Dr. Anuja R. Singh, HOD- Optometry Program,TSNA, Shankara Nethralaya, Chennai. Dr. Anuja emphasized on the importance of communication through power point presentation on General Communication, non-verbal communication, physical communication, appearance and dress for interviews, the need and usage of English Language, how to prepare oneself for interview, how to answer during an interview etc. She quoted instances from her own experiences as a recruiter and an Academy HOD. She also insisted on the need to communicate in many languages and urged the students to learn a new language apart from English and Tamil. Dr. Anuja's PPT on Time management was very interesting with useful tips for everyone. She spoke about job opportunities in Shanakara Nethralaya and weekend training offered in Shankara Nethralaya Academy. The session ended with questions from students on communication and how to overcome fear of English language.

REPORT ON JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN INSURANCE SECTOR

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a program on Job Opportunities in Insurance Sector for final year students. The programme was held on 14/09/16 at Illango Hall. The Chief Guest Mr. Dakshinamoorthy, Assistant Manager, LIC, Chennai. explained the importance of the growing Insurance sector, types of Insurances, private players in the insurance sector etc. He also narrated how to prepare for the exams conducted by LIC. He further elaborated on the recruitment made by LIC every year, pay package given to direct recruits, job opportunities and pay package in private insurance companies etc. He also explained in detail about the procedure involved in becoming an insurance agent, commission that will be paid, tips for being a successful insurance agent, income earned by agents of LIC etc.

On 01/09/16 Resume Writing competition for second and third year students at Illango Arangam was conducted. 57 second year students participated and 40 third year students participated in the competition. REPORT ON THE BARCLAYS TRAINING PROGRAM

A 60 hour training program on "Retail Sales Associate" was conducted by the Barclays Bank from 15 February 2016 to 12 March 2016. Around 40 final year students from B. Sc Computer Science, BCA, B. Sc Bio-Chemistry, B. Com Corporate, B.Com ISM and BBA participated in the training. The sessions covered the following topics:

  1. Retail demonstration of product presentation
  2. Help customers choose the right product
  3. Maximise sales
  4. Specialist support to facilitate purchases
  5. Personalised sales and post-sales services
  6. Credit applications
  7. Customer relationship
  8. Reliable customer service
  9. Customer concerns
  10. Improve customer service
  11. Store security
  12. Image building
  13. Maintain retail health and safety
  14. Work effectively in a team
  15. Work effectively in an organisation

The training helped the students to pursue their career in retail sales, knowledge of various relevant technique and tools of selling, promoting products, understanding of current market trends, seasonal new brands, trends etc. The programme also enabled them to enhance decision-making skills, planning and organizing skills, analytical thinking and helped them building a keen customer-centric approach.
The follow up of the program continued from 22 March 2016 with the "Art of Living" for three days till 24 March 2016. On 26 March 2016, HDBFC (part of HDFC Bank) and Airtel came for campus recruitment. HDBFC selected 7 students and Airtel selected 27 students for marketing and for their showroom.

REPORT ON CAMPUS DRIVE BY HDBFC and AIRTEL

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a Campus Drive program for final year students on 26 March 2016 from 1.30pm to 4.30 pm in the college premises. Mr. Madhan Kumar, Branch Manager, HDBFC, (a financial wing of HDFC Bank) along with his team conducted the programme. Mr. Hariharan, Airtel also selected the students for the post of Sales Associate in Airtel. Mr. Arvind, Barclays Trainer, coordinated the program. A total of 42 final year students from III B.Com (ISM), III BBA, III B.Sc (CS), III B.Sc (BIO), III BCA & III B.Com (CS) participated. Mr. Madhan Kumar first briefed the students at Illango Hall about the drive and how selection will be done. The programme was conducted in 2 separate rooms for HDBFC & Airtel. Mr. Madhan Kumar, Branch Manager, HDBFC, conducted Group Discussion in the first round. The students were divided into 6 groups and discussion was conducted . Students were selected based on their performance in the group discussion. The students selected in the first round were asked to attend personal interview immediately. After the personal interview 7 students got selected. The selected students were asked to report for duty as soon as their exams would be over. Mr. Hariharan, Airtel selected the students on the basis of personal interview only. He selected 18 students to work in Airtel showrooms. REPORT ON CAMPUS DRIVE PROGRAMME

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a Campus Drive program for final year students on 03 March 2016 in the college. Ms .Sudha, HR Manager of Shanakaranethralaya with her team conducted the programme for selecting the students for Shanakaranethralaya Eye Hospital, Chennai . A total of 49 final year students from all the departments participated. Ms. Sudha first briefed the students at Illango Hall about Shankaranethralaya, nature of the job, salary and other benefits,etc. and how selection will be done. The programme was conducted in 2 stages. The students were given a written test for 30 minutes in the first round. Students were selected based on their performance in the Written Test. The students selected were asked to attend HR Interview immediately. 38 students attended the interview. After personal interview 34 students were selected. The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a Campus Drive program for final year students on 04 March 2016 in the college. Ms. Muthulakshmi of Indian School of Science and Management, Tharamani along with her team conducted the programme for selecting the students for Marketing Executive Posts in her organization . A total of 69 final year students from all departments participated in the campus drive. The students were first briefed about the organization, Job and how selection will be done. The programme was conducted in 3 stages. First round was Written Test. Students selected in the first round were asked to attend the Group Discussion. The students were divided into 12 per group and group discussion was conducted . Students were selected based on their performance in the group discussion. The students selected in the second round were asked to attend HR Interview immediately. 20 students attended the interview. After the personal interview 11 students were shortlisted. PRE-PLACEMENT TRAINING

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee of the college conducts Pre-placement Training for the final year students of all disciplines from 11 January 2016 to 23 January 2016 between 12.45p.m to 2.45p.m. On completion of the course, graduates are supposed to step into their career with confidence and students are expected to demonstrate Industry-demanded skills. Keeping this key aspect into consideration, to enhance their skills and to achieve placement, the institution took the responsibility of training the students. Mrs. Nappineai, Dr. S. Savitha, Mr. Sadeesh and Mrs. Garima Shankar gave training for the students on the following topics:

  3. Letter Writing, E-Mail Writing
  4. Attitude, SWOT Analysis, News Paper Reading

The students attended the classes with full spirit and enthusiasm.

CAMPUS RECRUITMENT DRIVE - TVS TRAINING AND SERVICES

TVS Training and Services conducted "Campus Recruitment Drive" for Sales Officers Post in ICICI Bank in the campus on 28 January 2016. A total of 61 final year students from all disciplines attended the interview. A team of three members Mr. Bharathson, Regional Manager, Mr. K. Arunkumar, Area Manager and Mr. Raiyees, Executive Sourcing were involved in conducting the interview. Mr. Arunkumar briefed the students about the TVS group of companies and its various functioning. Also he briefed the applicants on ICICI Bank and the Sales Officer Role, Selection process and Salary package plus posting. Mr. Bharathson had an interactive session with the students to brainstorm them. A written examination was conducted to test the Language Proficiency of the students at the preliminary level. Out of 61 participants 51 were shortlisted for the next level. These students would take up the Online Assessment (Round II) and Personal Interview (Round III) during the first week of March in the TVS campus at Ambattur Estate.

CAMPUS DRIVE PROGRAMME BY PLACEMENT AND CAREER GUIDANCE COMMITTEE

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a Campus Drive program for final year students on 07 January 2016. Ms .Ritu Tibarewal of GTT Connect with her team conducted the programme to select students for Capgemini. A total of 37 final year students from III B.Com A & B and III B.Com (ISM) participated. Ms. Ritika briefed the students about the selection process. The programme was conducted in 3 stages. First round was Group Discussion. The students were divided into 12 per group. The selected students were then asked to take up a Written Test to test their knowledge in reasoning and arithmetical skills. Report on Employability Skill Test (EST)

Shakespeare Institute of English Studies , An Institute of English for Advanced Studies and Research conducts State Level Competitions for the students of Engineering and Arts and Science Colleges in Proficiency Test in English (PTE) in order to motivate them in the development of their English Communication Skills and Positive Attitude in Employability Skills. To train the students for the corporate life, the Placement and Career Guidance Cell focuses on The Employability Skill Test (EST) as per the guidance given by Dr. S. Venkatraman. The students were explained about the importance of this test and 37 students from various disciplines volunteered and enrolled for the competition. Study Materials and a Model Question Paper was sent to each student by the Shakespeare Institute.
On 6 October 2015, an Orientation was given to the 37 participants in two batches, by Dr. S. Savitha on the topics to be covered and how to prepare for the exam. The Exam Question Paper was sent by the Shakespeare Institute to the college on 8 October 2015. The Test was conducted on 12 October 2015 for duration of 1 hr 15 mts. 35 students appeared for the test. Ms. Nappinaei invigilated the exam. They were tested on the following topics for 100 marks:

Report on skill development by Placement and Career guidance committee

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a program on SKILL DEVELOPMENT for the benefit of final year students.The program was held on 31st December 2015. The duration of the program was one hour. The speaker for the day was Dr. Anuja R. Singh, Head-Optomery Programs, The Sankara Nethralaya Academy, Chennai. Dr. Anuja mentioned in her speech about the need for having goals in life. She spoke in detail about education training and personal mastery. She also said that the person who does things differently always succeeds. She insisted on need for having a personal vision and that a person with no future vision becomes worthless. She explained the concept of belief by narrating Poosalar's story. Dr. Anuja asked the students to write their vision in the year 2020 and share it with her by mail at her mail id anujar@snmail.org. The program came to an end with an interactive session. Students asked various questions relating to job opportunities in Optical Sales showrooms.

Report on Motivation Programme

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a motivation program for final year students. The topic for this motivation program was HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN COMPETITIVE EXAMS. The program was held on 03 September 2015. The Chief Guest for this program was Mrs. Anitha Nandhini, Indian Foreign Service, 2008 Batch, Head of Commerce Wing, Indian Consulate, Dubai, UAE. Mrs. Anitha Nandhini started her speech by insisting that everyone should study the Constitution of India. She told the students to dream big, work hard and taste success. She insisted that there was nothing to fear and 2 hours of intensive study everyday and daily newspaper reading are enough to be successful in TNPSC & UPSC Exams. She mentioned in her speech that discipline, consistency and determination are the key to success. Observation and curiosity are also necessary for success. Mrs. Anitha Nandhini mentioned the process of UPSC Exams like prelims, mains and personal interview and how to prepare for them, the government agencies and private coaching centers available etc. She also explained about two IAS officers Mr. Nanda Kumar and Mr. Amara Ram Gujjar who inspite of their poor background and lack of English knowledge were successful civil servants. The program came to an end with an interaction by students and various questions relating to competitive exams answered.
A total of 160 students participated in the program. After the program oral feedback was collected from the students by Placement committee members.

Report on Career Opportunities in Logistics and Shipping

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee conducted a programme on CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN LOGISTICS AND SHIPPING for the benefit of final year students.The programme was held on 02 September 2015. The speaker of the day was Mr. A.D. Sukumar, General Manager, Indian Logistics Institute, Chennai. Mr. Sukumar mentioned in his speech that technology, trade and money were the need of the hour. He further elaborated that on a daily basis 1.8 million containers are imported and exported at Chennai Port. He further mentioned that this was the only recession proof profession in today's world. Mr. Sukumar insisted that job opportunities are in plenty for students belonging to all disciplines and with the right attitude towards their job they can be very successful and earn money in lakhs per month. He made a PPT explaining the various kinds of ships used for transporting different types of goods. He also explained what courses students should undergo apart from their graduation to be a successful logistician. The program came to an end with an interaction with students and various questions relating to job opportunities in shipping and logistics answered.
A total of 157 students participated in the program.

Report on Campus to Corporate program by Rotaract and Placement committee

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee along with Rotaract conducted a program on Career Guidance called CAMPUS TO CORPORATE on August 19, 2015 for the benefit of the final year students. The Chief Guest for the day was Rtn. K. Ramachandran. In his speech, he highlighted the following points- ways and means to develop one's communication skill, Self-confidence, Proper attire, body language, and Leadership skill. He emphasized on the importance of being a team player to be successful in one's profession. He also quoted real-life stories of various famous personalities to motivate the students. Rtn. K. Ramachandran inculcated the need for staying focused in life and setting right goals to be successful. He concluded his talk by saying that students should take failure to their heads and analyse, failure should not deter a person, and on the other hand success should be taken to the heart and not to head. At end of the program there was an interactive session with the students. Various questions were raised by the students regarding - levels of interview conducted by various organizations, basis of HR interview , Aptitude test, importance of campus recruitment, updating knowledge, etc. Rtn. K. Ramachandran answered all these questions and also stressed upon the importance of attitude, communication, punctuality, quality of work in performance appraisal. A total of 154 students participated in the programme. Rotaract office -bearers and volunteers helped in the smooth conduct of the programme.

There were two sessions. The forenoon session was conducted by Dr. Uma Sreedhar, Campus Head & Dean, IBS Business School, Banglore. She highlighted the following points in her session.

  • Learning Style of students
  • Visual Picture learners - those who learn by looking at pictures
  • Visual Text learners - those who learn by reading texts or written material
  • Verbal learners - those who learn by discussing with others
  • Auditory learners - those who learn by listening
  • Tactile learners - those who learn by touch, feel and experimentation

Theories of Motivation were explained in detail. Each theory was analysed with case studies. She concluded the session with questionnaire given to each team and answers discussed. The afternoon session was conducted by Dr. Ashish Dash, Faculty Member, IBS Banglore. He highlighted the following points:

  • Pedagogy Followed
  • Chalk and Talk, Case Studies, Games, Videos, Experiments etc.

Mr. Dash spoke in detail about the advantages and disadvantages in lecture method and case study method. He also explained the role of the Faculty Member and the relationship between student and faculty. At the end of the program all Participants were given certificates. There were a total of 78 participants from various colleges in Chennai.

Report on Power Point Presentation by students who attended ICL Internship

A power point presentation was arranged on behalf of Placement Committee on July 15, 2015 at 1.30 pm in Illango Hall. Six students from pursuing III B. Com (CS) underwent one month internship program at India Cements Ltd. during the month of May '15. The students were:

These students gave a power point presentation on what they had learnt at India Cements Ltd. During their training period. Two students L.Mathankipriya and A. Surendharan were sent for a training session called Good to Great which was conducted for ICL Staff. These two students shared their experiences in this program. The students expressed their gratitude to Dr.S.Venkatraman, Mr.A.B.Srinivasan and Ms. Sowbarnika from HR, ICL. The students also shared their experience about training in a corporate environment and the changes it has brought about in their attitude, punctuality, body language, dress code etc. Dr. S. Venkatraman congratulated the students on their performance. The program was attended by the Corporate Secretaryship students from all three years. Six students who will be attending one week internship program in ICL from other departments also attended the program.

An Interactive Session with PROF. Radha Hedge

Prof. Radha Hegde from Newyork University had an interactive session with the students on July 13, 2015 between 11.30 am and 12.45 pm in the AV Room. Prof. Radha Hegde started the session by introducing herself and encouraged the students to question her regarding the students and culture of Newyork, globalization, need of English language etc. She made the students comfortable by talking to them about their subjects and area of interest. Prof. Radha Hegde took an example of the movie English Vinglish, stated that it was shot in Newyork City where she lives. She asked the students to narrate the story of the movie and explained the importance of English as a global language, and the prestige people get by talking in English, and also how the social status is determined by the knowledge of English etc. She also spoke on the importance of globalization and how things have changed because of it. The students asked questions and cleared their doubts on various issues. The session was a very lively one. 10 students from each department irrespective of year of study attended the session. A total of 66 students took part in this interactive session.

Report on Career Guidance Seminar held on 07/07/2015

The Placement and career guidance committee conducted a Career Guidance Seminar on 07/07/2015. Delegates from IBS associated with ICFAI addressed the students. Mr. K. Thinesh Tilton, Branch Manager, ICFAI Group explained in detail the merits of pursuing higher education and the various options available. He highlighted the difference in salary structure when students enter the job market with a professional degree like MBA. Mr. Thilton also gave his mobile number to students and urged them to contact him whenever they required any assistance in career guidance. He also expressed his willingness to visit the college again to create awareness among students about higher education. More than 200 students from III yrs. And II yrs. attended the seminar.

Training on "How to face interview"

The Placement and Career Guidance Committee had organized a one day training programme on "How to Face Interviews" on 16 June 2015. Mr. M. L. Narendra Kumar, corporate trainer was the chief guest. The speaker started his session insisting on the importance of setting goals in life. He also insisted on the importance of communication skills and English knowledge for excelling in job interviews. He gave various activities to the students in this regard. He also gave various tips to the students about how they should conduct themselves at the time of attending a job interview regarding dress code, perfume usage, body language etc. through role play and power point presentation. He made the session all the more interesting through real life examples. Mr. Narendra also explained the nuances of resume writing. Around 61 students from various disciplines participated in the session comprising both out gone and present third year students. All the students actively participated with the trainer during the session. The session ended with students raising various questions related to job interviews.
Dr. S. Venkatraman, Vice-President ICL concluded the session by motivating the students to do better in their forthcoming interviews. He also thanked Mr. M.L. Narendra for conducting the training session in spite of his busy schedule.
