She had pursued her under graduation and post graduation in Bio-Chemistry from Bharathi Women's College,Chennai, M.Phil and Ph.D at IBMS Taramani, University of Madras.She qualified her SET and has about 20 years of teaching experience in the field of Biochemistry, conducted National Conference and Seminar at our college to expose students to modern technologies.
The Department of Biochemistry was established in the Year 1996 with UG course. The Department gradually developed and PG course was introduced in the year 2006. Since its inception the Department has produced 1 gold medalist and 6 university rank holders. The Department has a well equipped laboratory suitable for doing research activities. It is also keen in promoting activities beyond academics. Seminars, workshops, guest lectures and inter collegiate meets are being conducted every year.
The department of Biochemistry and Computer Science organized a one day Scientific Seminar on Women Safety and Cyber Security on 20 September 2018 in association with Indian Science Congress Association-Chennai Chapter. The programme started with invocation and traditional Lamp Lighting ceremony. The welcome address was delivered by the Principal. The theme of the seminar was introduced by Dr. P. Mahalakshmi, HOD, Dept.of Biochemistry. The dignitaries were felicitated by Mr.T. Ravi Shankar, HOD, Dept. of Computer Science. The inaugural address was given by Guest of Honour- DR. S.V. Kasmir Raja, Dean (Research) SRM University, Chennai. The inaugural session concluded with Key Note address by Chief Guest, Letika Saran, IPS (retd.), Former Director General of Police, Tamilnadu. The technical session consisted of talk by Dr. M.Suryakala, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, Government Arts College for Men, Chennai on Safety and Security of Women in Cyberspace and by the chief guest on Keeping Oneself Secure in the Cyberspace. The seminar concluded with vote of thanks by Vice Principal Mrs. K.T.Hema. We would like to extend a special thanks to our management and the Indian Science Congress Association, Chennai Chapter for sponsoring this seminar. The seminar was conducted with the intention of empowering women to navigate the internet without fear. Tips and advices were given to defend and protect themselves from harassment on and off the web. The seminar also helped to increase student awareness and mastery of cyber security concepts.
World Nature Conservation Day is celebrated on July 28 each year in order to raise awareness about protecting nature and conserving our natural resources.
To encourage the participation of the present generation in the protection and management of our natural resources, the Department of Biochemistry conducted poster presentation and oratorical competitions for their students on the theme Environment Conservation. The programme was organised at the department on 16 July 2018. A total of 14students participated in the event.

Brief Description: In commemoration of World Vitiligo Day, an awareness talk on Vitiligo followed by a lecture cum demonstration on Vector borne diseases (Malaria, Dengue, Filaria, Chikunguniya, Japanese Encephalitis, Kala azar),preventive and control measures were delivered. The programme focussed on educating the student community (70 students from Dept. of Biochemistry and NSS volunteers) about vitiligo as well as precautionary measures and identification of disease causing mosquito larvae.
The Department of Biochemistry had organized an Intercollegiate fiesta to commemorate Nutrition week in association with Food & Nutrition Board, Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India, on 07/09/16.

The Department of Biochemistry had organized an industrial visit to International Institute of Biotechnology and Toxicology Research Institute, Padappai on 17.08.2016. Final year UG and PG students of the Department visited IIBAT along with a staff, Mrs.P.Mahalakshmi. Students were exposed to various instrumentation and latest updates on research field.
